Main Page
I am an ongoing Computer Science student at Cardiff University. I will update this page as I progress further throughout my course.

Joel Murphy

From September 2012 to August 2015, I undertook a degree in Computer Science and Software Development.
Why did I decide to study Computer Science and Software Development at the University of Application Development?
I chose to study it because I find computers interesting. Their never-ending possibilities and abilities to make people’s lives simpler, fun, and more worthwhile opened up a whole range of career changes and ideas for me, which is why I wanted to learn more about them.
As you may have read on other pages of my website, I would have done a degree in Engineering, or Business Studies if I wasn’t doing a Computer Science degree.

Why did I decide that Cardiff University was the place for me?

I had my mind set on 2 Universities in particular. One of them being Aberystwyth University, the other being Cardiff University. I decided that Cardiff was the place for me as it was local to home and I felt as if I wasn’t ready to leave home at the age of 18.
Cardiff is a great City to live in and I feel as if I did the right decision by staying home. Cardiff University has a useful department full of facilities for learning and performing computer science studies.

How did I get into Cardiff University?

Software Development University Cardiff

I got into Cardiff University because I had a decent personal statement. If you need some inspiration with writing your own personal statement for a Computer Science course at University, you can use mine as a template if you wish.
Was a doing a degree worth it?
This is a tough one. The range of topics covered were broad, but the lack of support on course material was abysmal. It was a fun (and stressful) experience, but I do not think University is worth the money. For me personally, I don’t feel as if a degree was very beneficial to me and if I could turn back time, I wouldn’t have gone to University. You can learn pretty much everything covered in the (very dull) lectures for free, and this is what I ended up doing most of the time anyway. All that debt for a little guidance, but that’s life I guess!

My modules

  • Problem Solving with Python
  • Professional Skills
  • Fundamentals of Computing with Java
  • Architecture
  • Operating Systems
  • Custom Software Development Services
  • Human-Computer Interaction

What was my favourite module throughout University?
One semester project (Dissertation) was my favourite module because it gave me complete freedom to manage my own project and research a topic that was of interest to me. To read more information about my final dissertation and the topic I decided to research, please view my dissertation page.
